Hot or Not – CORSAGES

14 Sep

Hot or Not.  Corsages… Some say that the corsage all together is not so hot.  Mothers and Grandmothers of the bride and groom love to be honoured with flowers.  They like to show off that they are important.  And really, if you are reading my blog, the chance is you like flowers!  So why not!

There have been some changes in corsage trends recently.  First of all, wrist corsages are pretty much considered PROM ONLY.  Now, not everyone agrees with that, but the trend shows that wrist corsages are for the youngins. One of the biggest positive corsage trends is being that they are not to be worn… The new idea is that mothers of the bride and groom get little posies or tussy mussies (tiny bouquets) to hold instead of wearing a corsage.  The other trend is to adorn your hand bag, clutch or purse with your corsage so not to ruin your dress or jacket.  Take a look at this mini Inspiration Hot or Not Corsage Board.

Hot or Not – Opaque Arrangement Containers

30 Jun

What’s HOT these days in Floral design?  It’s not glass…. But opaque containers for your centrepieces and arrangements.  Popularity has increased in unique containers like tea cups and tea pots, and solid items like vintage cans, ceramics, stone, and metal containers.  There is nothing wrong with glass, as using mason jars is REALLY popular right now… And quite lovely.  But consider using something OTHER than the typical 4×4 glass cube.  It also is beneficial for the floral designer using a opaque container as then you can use foam which keeps everything in place long term.  I love floral foam.  Love it.  Take a look – and consider it for your designs!

Hot or Not – Boutonnieres

16 Jun

Here’s a new installment of HOT or NOT by Dandie Andie Designs.  This week we are talking about boutonnieres.  In my opinion, body flowers are a great way to do something out of the norm and an easy way to have a little fun with your floral design.  Take a look at the differences in the boutonnieres below.

Current floral design trends show that flower groupings, different blooms and textures, unique ties and ribbons and mixed colours are the way to go with body flowers.  The things that are showing to be a little passe are single flowers, one colour body flowers, single bloom with greens, plain ribbons and classic flowers like roses and callas and orchids.

Hot or Not – Potted Plants

6 Apr

I need to have a disclaimer with the “Over-Done Single Orchid Pot”…. They are beautiful, they are a great alternative for an inexpensive centrepiece , but phaleonopsis orchids are way more common than they were 5 or 10 years ago.  You couldn’t buy them at every grocery store floral shop.  As the demand has increased, the price has decreased which make it an ideal option for a potted plant (usually $20-25).  But there are a million other options with potted plants and another million for phaleonopsis orchids.  One big difference is that as a cut flower, phaeleonopsis are about $13-15 a BLOOM and come with about 6 or more blooms per stem, which makes it a VERY expensive flower.  For a potted phaleonopsis at a floral shop is closer to $30-$40.

Here are some other phaleonopsis options:

Hot or Not – Daisies

What’s IN and what’s… not so in….

7 Mar

I have a love and hate relationship with the HOT or NOT.  When it comes to fashion….

  • About 50% of the “hot” I don’t like.
  • 40% would look terrible on me and my body shape and size.
  • 5% I would wear and could probably “pull-off” but are completely unnecessary items that I don’t need to incorporate into my wardrobe….
  • Then there is that remaining 5% that I can actually take into account when buying a new piece of clothing.

Obviously trends change over time, decades of clothing loop around and make it’s reappearance (I AM STILL SHOCKED THAT SHOULDER PADS ARE COMING AROUND) and colour and style trends are reported to be different every five minutes.

Well, it’s a little different than floral design.  Well, in my opinion it is a little different in floral design.  Yes – there are trends.  Yes – there are things that are “coming back” that haven’t been around in floral design for a while.  Yes – there are things that a lot of people won’t find attractive…. But it’s also ART.  Floral DESIGN can be to ‘each his own’.  There are styles that each designer has…. There are flowers that are used more often than others… But there are not very many NEVERs in Floral Design.  But once again, this is just my opinion.  Take a look at what I have noticed in recent floral design trends.  I may add that I am not an expert, I have not been in the industry for decades… But I have an eye for flowers and I am an avid blogger and blog reader, web surfer, tweet reader, stumbleupon-er, and all that goes in between.  And, with a dash of personal opinion – here are my suggestions and observations:

WHAT IS HOT #1 – Monochromatic bouquets.  Bouquets in the same colour, but with different shades and hues represented… And different kinds of flowers used!

WHAT IS HOT #2 – Texture

WHAT IS HOT #3 – Wild Garden Look (Designers like Ariella Chezar and Petalena)

WHAT IS HOT #4 – Tussy Mussies (Tiny Posies) for Corsages *instead of wrist corsages*

WHAT IS HOT #5 – Mixed Mediums with Floral Designs (Fabric, Paper, Metals, Ceramics)

WHAT IS, uh, NOT so HOT #1 – A one colour/one flower Bouquet

WHAT IS, uh, NOT so HOT #2 – Pageant Style Arm Bouquets

WHAT IS, uh, NOT so HOT #3 – Tall, round, table top Arrangements

WHAT IS, uh, NOT so HOT #4 – Traditional Waterfall/Cascading Bouquets

WHAT IS, uh, NOT so HOT #5 – Long Calla Lillies
